Here is just what the world needs, an envrionmentally friendly bicycle called
the Aprilia Enjoy. This badboy comes with a rechargeable Ni MeH battery which charges up in just a few hours. Once charged it goes a full 40 km. It comes in racing and city models.
The gadget works as a normal 6 speed bicycle for those times when you need a little exercise or if you run out of power. But it weighs 64 lbs. (more for the city model) so it may not be a whole lot of fun to pedal home from work every day. You want to make sure the battery is charged!
It is also a little pricey at $2,500+ australian. I was unable to find the product on the
US web site of the Italian manufacturer so I have no idea if it is even available here.
I am left wondering whether this is actually an improvement on the traditional ten speed which retails for somewhat less unless you buy Lance Armstrong's latest race winner. My ten speed cost just over a hundred American bucks, has unlimited range, and is a whole lot lighter. While there is a racing model, I'm not aware of any bicycle races which allow you to use "motorized assistance." Finally, my personal ten speeder has no batteries which will eventually end up in a landfill nor does it suck any juice from the power grid.

in NY state you may use a powered "assist" motor up to 49 cc's. Over that is considered a moped. they do about 20 mph, it goes on you existing bike, it very light when not in use, and are pretty good on fuel. The downside, they are loud as Hell. Long live the No Licence Club.
